USEFUL
INFORMATION
Documentation:
A passport is required for excursions into Morocco, and
arrangements should be made for entry into the country before
departure. In Melilla, the only documentation required is
a National Identity Card.
Getting
around:
Vehicles may be hired (preferably 4-wheel drive), or you
may take your own, and fuel prices in Melilla are lower
than mainland Spain. The city can be explored on foot,
or by bus or taxi.
Public holidays & festivals:
With such a melange of cultures, there are different celebrations
in Melilla at nearly all times of the year. Following
the solar calendar, Christian religious holidays include
not only Easter, Christmas and the Epiphany, but also
the Feast of Our Lady of the Victory and St Francis (the
patron saint of the city). The principal religious holidays
of the Muslims, who follow the lunar calendar, are: Ramadan,
Id El-Fitr (marking the end of Ramadam), Aid El Kebir
(the Feast of the Sacrifice) , Achra (the commemoration
of the birth of the Prophet), and the Muslim New Year.
The Jewish community also follow the lunar calendar, and
their main holidays are Purim (the Carnival), Pesaj (Easter),
Shavuot (Pentecost), Ros-hashaná (the New Year)
and Yom Kippur (the Feast of Forgiveness). The Indian
community, the most recent settlers in Melilla, celebrate
a number of holy days, the main being Diwali, the Hindu
New Year festival.
Shopping:
The shopping areas of Melilla abound with Muslim, Jewish
and Indian stores where hand-crafted leather work, wall
hangings, local pottery, and accessories may be purchased.
There are also more modern establishments where the visitor
can buy designer jewellery, the most exclusive brands
of watches, and top national and international labels,
all at bargain prices.
Currency
As in the rest of Spain,
the official currency of Melilla is the Euro. Denominations
include 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euro notes, and
coins to the value of: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, as
well as 1 and 2 pieces.
It should be noted that all amounts
above 6.011 euros being brought into or taken out of the
country must be declared to the authorities.
