SUN SEA AND SPORT
In Melilla the
sea is an active presence all the year round. It is no
surprise, then, that water-based activities, sports and
outdoor activities abound.
Melilla is achieving no little fame as host to the City
of Melilla Regatta Week, held in the first fortnight of
August and classified as a High Level event by the Royal
Spanish Sailing Federation.
Melilla is also a fantastic place for
sub-aqua fishing. The African Mediterranean coast is one
of the most beautiful places to practise this sport, and
there are many more fish species to be found in these
waters than off the coasts of Europe. The prevailing winds
of Melilla are vital for fishing. In the sea around Melilla,
sub-aqua fishing enthusiasts will find not only grouper,
codfish, ‘sarguito’ (a common local species)
or sea bream of between 3 and 5 Kg.; but also crystal
clear waters, which will ensure delightful excursions
into the deep.
The Noray Marina now offers a whole host of services of
the highest levels of quality. It is located at the southern
end of the port and has berths for 339 sailing boats and
recreational vessels (for lengths of between 6 and 24
metres)). In the adjoining area, all kinds of services
are offered for sailors.
For those who enjoy swimming and the beach, Melilla has
two kilometres of beaches of very fine sand lapped by
waters of the calm, safe Mediterranean. The beaches have
European Union blue flag status, a guarantee of their
quality in all respects. Every kind of water sport is
available, including, for example, jet ski and water skiing,
with the main protagonist being, of course, the warm waters
of the Mediterranean.
